Chirata is a herb. This species is distributed globally in India, Nepal and Bhutan. Within India, it is found in the contemporary Himalayas between Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Khasi Hills of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh in an altitude range of 1200–3000 m.
